Castello di Gargonza
Monte San Savino, Tuscany, Italy.

There are records of this extraordinary place as far back as 1150 when it was described as a fortress on the route between Siena and Arezzo.
Over time a village grew up around the structure, but by the beginning of the 19th century it had all but been abandoned. Indeed, it wasn’t until the early 1970’s that a restoration project got underway.
Notwithstanding its notable architectural heritage, its most significant historic claim-to-fame is that Dante Alighieri stayed here for several days while in exile in 1303.
Today, Castello di Gargonza offers accommodation throughout the village (13 buildings in all), and boasts an outdoor swimming pool (seasonal), private gardens, and the La Torri di Gargonza restaurant.
