Imperiale Palace Hotel
Santa Margherita Ligure, Liguria, Italy.
Originally constructed as a private villa in 1889, the Imperiale Palace Hotel only came into existence as recently as 1905 when a new wing was added to the original house.
Early guests included icons such as the Italian actress Eleonora Duse and Queen Elena of Italy. However, perhaps its most notable historic significance relates to the aftermath of World War I.
Indeed, it was in what is today referred to as the “Treaty Room” that Walter von Rathenau (the German Minister for Foreign Affairs) met his Russian counterpart, Georgij Vasilevic Cicerin, to sign the Treaty of Rapallo on April 16th 1920. This set out to restore normality in diplomatic relationships between the two.
Of course, we know now that the pact didn’t last. In fact, as an interesting addendum, some say that Eva Braun (Adolf Hitler’s famous female companion) once stayed in the building under a different identity. Eleanora Duse is also reputed to have been a regular guest.
Five star rated, The Imperiale Palace offers 89 guest rooms in all, and is within easy reach of Genoa (Genova) to the west.
