The Crown Inn
Marnhull, Dorset, England.
There are a number of inns in Dorset which claim an association to the works of Thomas Hardy, and the lovely Crown Inn at Marnhull is one of them.
In its case the link is to Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbevilles, in which it is the inspiration for the 'Pure Drop Inn', and where Tess's father invites Parson Tringham for a drink. And just as the inn has a different name in the novel, so does the village itself: Marlot.
Largely dating from the 1600's (though with many additions over subsequent centuries), the Crown was almost certainly constructed as a private house. These days, however, it offers bed and breakfast accommodation via 5 en suite guest rooms, including a suite and those suitable for families.
The Crown also features its own restaurant, and further evidence of the historic nature of the building is evidenced by a priest hole in the bar area.
