The Old Inn
Crawfordsburn, near Bangor, Northern Ireland.
This fascinating building is made up of parts from several different eras: the old thatched section being from around 1600, further 18th century additions, and a more modern Georgian-style East Wing.
A genuine coaching inn, it’s no surprise that the place has welcomed some notable figures travelling between England and Ireland. Although difficult to authenticate, the likes of Tennyson, Thackeray, Swift and Dickens are all reputed to have visited, although the 20th century literary icon C S Lewis certainly did.
Other famous figures reputed to have connections with The Old Inn include John Paul Jones, Dick Turpin and Peter the Great. How much truth there is in these claims is impossible to tell, but it remains a distinct possibility.
Today, the Old Inn offers 31 character bedrooms and some award winning hospitality just 10 miles away from the centre of Belfast.
