Palazzo Murat
Positano, Campania, Italy.
It is said that when Napoleon Bonaparte’s brother-in-law, Gioacchino Murat, became King of Naples in 1808 he was so smitten with Positano and this old Palazzo that he made it into his summer residence.
The original part of what is now a celebrated hotel dates from the 18th century, although some of the accommodation is within a newer wing – the Deluxe Rooms full of historic character are within the former, while the fresh and airy Superior and Garden View rooms are set within the latter.
Though right at the heart of Positano, the hotel’s boasts a fine Mediterranean garden which cushions it from the rest of the town. Furthermore, guests are only a short walk away from the beach (Spiaggia Grande) and the historic church of Santa Maria Assunta.
Those who stay here will also be following in the footsteps of some notable former visitors, John Steinbeck and Rudolph Nureyev amongst them.
Sometimes referred to as the “Pearl of the Amalfi Coast”, Positano is also a fine base from which to explore this renowned part of Campania.
