Shakespeare House
Grendon Underwood, Buckinghamshire, England

With regret, Shakespeare House is no longer offering accommodation. This is a legacy page.
It is surprising that for a man who was extremely well-travelled for his time, we know little of where William Shakespeare stayed on his journeys. But then, of course, for such a long period of his life he was a relative unknown who would have passed through towns and villages in anonymity.
That said, there are a handful of places still in existence which purport to having been where the Bard of Avon found shelter and lodgings. Of these, Shakespeare House at Grendon Underwood is one of those with a more credible claim.
Today dispensing fine guest house accommodation, this attractive Elizabethan structure was once a coaching inn on the road between Stratford and London. It makes perfect sense, therefore, that the building is rumoured to have been used by William Shakespeare on several occasions while journeying between the two. Indeed, the playwright and poet would almost certainly recognise it today.
Shakespeare House offers a total of five guest rooms and is, quite rightly and unsurprisingly, a Grade-II* listed building.
