The Rose and Crown
Colchester, Essex, England.
While we largely feature places where famous figures from history have stayed in the past, there are some establishments that are worthy of inclusion simply on account of their still being in existence. Such buildings really need to be celebrated.
The Rose and Crown in Colchester is one of those, and very much merits its inclusion due to it being the oldest documented hotel in the oldest documented town in England - a worthy accolade. Admittedly, much of the structure isn’t original having been extended and restored, but its origins are still 15th century.
Accommodation is to be had in both the original house and a contemporary annexe (history buffs will no doubt prefer the former). Dining is available in both a formal restaurant and the more informal Tudor bar and brasserie. Ipswich, Harwich and Braintree are all just a short drive away.
