Baur au Lac
Zurich, Switzerland.
Dating back to 1844 when it was first opened by Johannes Baur (it is still owned by the same family), this 5-star hotel continued to expand in both size and reputation until the end of the 19th century. To here came numerous members of the European nobility, with Empress Elizabeth of Austria spending an entire Summer in the house. Kaiser Wilhelm II, and the Tsarina of Russia were also visitors.
However, far more important in historical terms is that it was here in 1892 that Alfred Nobel was reputed to have been convinced by the pacifist Baroness Bertha Von Suttner of the importance of a peace prize. It is also said that Richard Wagner gave the premiere of Act One of Die Walküre at the hotel, with his father-in-law, Franz Liszt, playing the piano.
The 120 rooms are all individually furnished and offer various theme such as Regency, Louis XIV and Art Deco, but with a little contemporary styling added to the mix.
A truly historic place to stay in every respect, Baur au Lac is undeniably one of the most iconic, yet relatively unheralded, hotels anywhere in the world.
