Luton Hoo Hotel
Luton, Bedfordshire, England
Taking almost a decade to build during the late 1700’s, the existing house is only the last of a number to have stood on the site. Designed by architect Robert Adam - with the grounds by Capability Brown - this fine country house was originally the home of the 3rd Earl of Bute.
Samuel Johnson described it as one of the places he did not “regret coming to see”, although it later required great work following a massive fire at the property in 1843. During its existence, however, it is said to have been patronised by several members of the royal family and other notable figures such as Sir Winston Churchill. Today, this grade-I listed property boasts around 1000 acres of parkland, an 18-hole golf course and a spa.
Its rooms are split between the Mansion House, Parkland Wing and Club House (where the spa is also located), and include Junior Suites, Mansion house Suites and State Suites. Guests can dine in the opulent Wernher Restaurant (named after a former owner), or the slightly more informal Adam’s Brasserie.
Welwyn Garden City, St. Albans, Hemel Hempstead, and Milton Keynes are all within easy reach.
