The Red Lion (The Relais Henley)
Henley, Oxfordshire, England.
Though much of the existing building is thought to date from the 18th century, one glance at the Grade I listed, 14th century, Chantry House which backs onto the Red Lion's courtyard proves that this is a very historic location indeed.
Whatever the actual age of the architectural fabric of the hotel itself, the establishment is certainly the owner of a very colourful past. This is something evidenced by the names of numerous rooms highlighting the property's connection with some notable figures from history.
The most obvious of these is the Charles I Room, named in honour of the monarch's visits in 1632 and 1642 (accompanied by Prince Rupert on the second occasion). Two other rooms are named after George III and Queen Charlotte, both of whom are said to have breakfasted at the Red Lion on the 12th of July, 1788. Moreover, a visit by the future George IV is commemorated in the name of the Prince Regent Room it is reported he feasted well on numerous chops.
Other famous figures from the past to have visited the inn include Boswell and Dr Johnson in 1776, Sir Winston Churchill, Grace Kelly in 1947, and The Duke of Wellington with General Blucher.
