Hotel Porta Rossa
Florence, Italy.
Largely dating from the 14th century, Porta Rossa has the distinction of being the oldest hotel in Florence – a fair accolade given the venerable age of many of its buildings.
Known to have been established in 1386, the building has dispensed fine Florentine hospitality to numerous members of the European aristocracy, but its most notable former guests are undoubtedly the poet Lord Byron and the novelist Honore de Balzac.
Despite being of such age, the building boasts in excess of 70 bedrooms. Those of a particularly romantic disposition might be interested in the Monalda Suite which is located in an ancient tower and is accessed by some 60 steps. Located across three floors, glorious views across Florence are available for those who choose to stay there.
