The Talbot
Malton, Yorkshire, England.
It is always surprising (and a little disappointing) to discover a lack of written records regarding historic figures who may have sojourned at such remarkable old inns as The Talbot. After all, this splendid building has been welcoming guests to the town for almost three hundred years, and was a hunting lodge before then.
However, we do know that the great American writer Nathaniel Hawthorne, stayed here with his wife, Sophia, for a short while during the summer of 1859 while en route to Whitby - this being documented in a letter written by Sophia to her sister, Elizabeth, from the hotel.
Moreover, it could be argued that the Talbot should be included on Nights in the Past purely on architectural merit. Its Grade II* listed status means that it is a building of "more than special interest", and the English Heritage description of its features is particularly impressive.
Today, the Talbot offers 26 individually furnished bedrooms of classic character. These include a number of feature rooms and suites, with the Rockingham and Fitzwilliam boasting four poster beds.
Dining is available in the hotel's celebrated restaurant as well as its splendid bar, while guests are welcome to take refreshment on the terrace during warmer months. Furthermore, those seeking to explore North Yorkshire in the company of their dog will no doubt be pleased to learn that The Talbot is particularly pet-friendly.
