Sopwell House
St Albans, Hertfordshire, England.
The earliest reference to what is now Sopwell House Hotel was in 1603 when a building known as New Barnes stood on the site. However, the building one sees today was largely developed during the Georgian period until being leased by Prince Louis of Battenberg, later Lord Mountbatten, 1st Marquess of Milford Haven
Lord Mountbatten’s daughter, Alice, was, of course, the mother of Prince Phillip Duke of Edinburgh. And it is believed that Prince Andrew of Greece proposed to Alice in the gardens of Sopwell House.
Today, Sopwell provides four star rated accommodation via over 120 guest bedrooms. Admittedly, the contemporary nature of the styling might not appeal to those who prefer a period feel or the ambience of historic architecture, but few will disapprove of the elegant surroundings.
The hotel also boasts an indoor swimming pool, fitness suite, and over 10 acres of grounds.
The centre of historic St. Albans is less than a mile to the north, while London is within easy reach via the M1 and the M25 London Orbital.
