The Old House
Nether Stowey, Somerset, England.
Formerly owned by a gentleman called Thomas Poole, this splendid property was once something of a retreat for Samuel Taylor Coleridge - author of English literature’s greatest epic poems: The Rime of The Ancient Mariner and Kubla Khan.
Indeed, guests are able to stay in the very room he used during visits to the village in which he had previously lived (his cottage, owned by the National Trust, is to be found nearby). The house was also used by Coleridge’s wife, Sarah Fricker, after their estrangement, and a second guest room bears her name
Moreover, during the poet’s time at the Old House, numerous other famous names of the early 19th century came to visit: William Wordsworth, Robert Southey, Josiah Wedgwood and Humphrey Davy amongst them.
The recipient of some outstanding reviews from former guests, The Old House has also received a Visit Britain 4-star Gold Award.
