Foxghyll
Ambleside, Cumbria, England

Whereas the vast majority of accommodation on Nights in the Past have connections to famous figures from history through their having stayed as a guest, a few were actually home to notable individuals. And so it is with Foxghyll in Ambleside.
Now a little 3-room bed & breakfast, the property was formerly occupied by Thomas de Quincey between 1820 and 1825. Indeed, it is reckoned that the author penned much of his world-famous Confessions of an English Opium Eater while in residence.
The building itself is said to date from the 17th century and is, quite rightly, Grade II listed. It also boasts several acres of landscaped gardens and access to Loughrigg Fell.
A 3 star Assessed Bed and Breakfast by Visit England, Foxghyll is just ten minutes from the centre of Ambleside on foot, while Grasmere, Windermere and Coniston water are all within easy reach for those travelling by car. All three guest rooms feature a television and tea & coffee making facilities.
