The Swan
Alton, Hampshire, England.
Many of those visiting the attractive market town of Alton do so in order to visit the nearby cottage, now a museum, which once belonged to Jane Austen – the author wrote such novels as Sense & Sensibility there.
However, The Swan, which is situated in the Main Street, is arguably of even greater historic merit than Miss Austen’s former home. The present building is said to date from the mid 16th century, although an inn has seemingly been present on the site for a great deal longer given that it was first mentioned in a charter of 1377.
During that time the building has welcomed a fair number of notable figures. These include Queen Elizabeth I, Lord Nelson, Sir Francis Drake, Judge Jeffreys and Field Marshall Montgomery.
Part of the Old English Inns group, The Swan boasts 37 guest rooms in total, along with a restaurant and bar. Basingstoke, Winchester, Farnham and Aldershot are all within a 20 miles radius of the hotel.
