This unusual and remarkable accommodation is so called on account that Catherine of Aragon, 1st wife of Henry VIII, is reputed to have stayed here in the early 1500‘s.
Indeed, Catherine is known to have had strong connections to the area and also to the former owners of the house (the Rocke family). Moreover, further evidence of a connection was uncovered during work on the property in the 1840‘s when motifs of Catherine and Henry VIII’s Coat of Arms were found behind panelling.
It has also been suggested that the connection is actually to Mary Tudor (not Catherine) who may have stopped here on the way to visit her mother at Ludlow Castle.
The Catherine of Aragon Suite forms just one part of a larger collective, namely the Old House Suites – the other rooms are the Mary Tudor Suite and the Thomas Bromley Suite. All are set within one of the town’s oldest inhabited buildings.
A historic gem, of that there is no question. In fact, there are few places anywhere in the world that offer period charm in quite the same way.
