The Ritz Hotel
Madrid, Spain.
Constructed in 1910, this is certainly one of the ‘youngest’ buildings to feature on Nights in the Past. Indeed, were it not for one of the most impressive metaphorical guest-books in the world it would probably not otherwise be listed (despite its reputation for excellent hospitality).
However, the sheer wealth of famous names who have patronised the Ritz Madrid during the last century is truly impressive. Leaving aside household names from the late 20th century such as Prince Ranier and Princess Grace of Monaco, Haile Selassie, Princess Diana and Nelson Mandela, the list is remarkable. Some stand-out figures from history include Mata Hari, Eva Peron, King Alfonso XIII, and Alexander Fleming.
The décor is distinctly classical, with many of its 167 guest rooms and suites lavishly furnished.
