King John's Hunting Lodge
Lacock, Wiltshire, England.
With regret, King John's is not currently offering bed & breakfast accommodation. This is a legacy page.
The very name of the place gives away its possible historic significance. Of course, we can only speculate, and the connection to King John (1166 -1216) might just be romantic legend. But it is said that he enjoyed hunting in the forests and woods of the immediate area – no smoke without fire, as the old saying goes.
However, what makes this place so remarkable also suggests that he didn’t actually visit the existing building, but more likely a predecessor (if one existed). We might hypothesise that parts of the structure are certainly from the time of King John, but English Heritage tree-ring analysis from the roof timbers suggests that the wood comes from felling during the 1320’s.
This in itself is quite remarkable, and King John’s Hunting Lodge is believed to be one of the oldest – if not the oldest – building in the enchanting medieval village of Lacock.
Today it offers bed & breakfast guest accommodation via two rooms, and the property also boasts its own Tudor Restaurant and Tea Rooms. The famous Wiltshire town of Chippenham is also nearby.
