The Royal Castle
Dartmouth, Devon, England.

The origins of this waterfront hotel date to the 1630’s when it was originally two merchants’ houses. One later became ‘The New Inn’ and prospered owing to the consistent flow of sailors arriving in the port. In 1782, however, both houses were combined to form ‘The Castle Inn’ which included stabling and its very own brew house.
Remnants of the old buildings still remain – fireplaces and priest holes included – while the impressive beams in the Galleon Bar are reputed to be those of a wrecked Spanish ship.
We cannot be sure if any famous figures stayed at the Royal Castle in its early days, but we certainly know that during the latter half of the 19th century, the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) would sometimes escape to the hotel’s first floor room (now the Nu Restaurant) – his sons attended HMS Brittania in Dartmouth as naval cadets at the time.
Several notable actors have also spent time here, notably Cary Grant and Gregory Peck. Moreover, the place was used as one of the sets for the 1985 film of Agatha Christie’s Ordeal by Innocence, starring Donald Sutherland and Faye Dunaway.
