The Midland Hotel
Manchester, England.
It may be little over a century old and one of the most recently built hotels to feature on Nights in the Past, but this Grade II* listed building which opened in 1903 is certainly worthy of inclusion here.
Although he never stayed here or even set foot in Manchester, it is said that Adolf Hitler was rather keen on using the place for his headquarters should Germany successfully invade England (although he was also rather taken with other buildings such as Dumbleton Hall in Worcestershire). Its main historic significance, however, is that it was here Charles Rolls met Frederick Henry Royce in May 1904 culminating in the creation of the world-famous Rolls-Royce motor company.
Undoubtedly one of the most recognizable buildings in Manchester, the baroque-style structure was created by the Midland Railway company to serve travellers to and from London St Pancras. Today it boasts over 300 guest rooms including 14 suites. Dining options at The Midland include the 2 AA Rosette French Restaurant, while guests also have access to an indoor swimming pool and gym.
