The Crown
Wells, Somerset, England.
Most accurately described as an inn with rooms, the architectural historian will find much to consider at The Crown.
Grade II* listed, the building dates largely from the 16th century, although its English Heritage listing text suggests that it incorporates “earlier fabric in the rear wing”. However, for the purposes of this guide its primary historic significance is that William Penn, founder of the State of Pennsylvania, is said to have preached here in 1695.
Legend has it that he addressed a crowd of two or three thousand people from one of the building’s upstairs windows. This, however, didn’t go down particularly well with some and he was threatened with arrest for unlawful assembly.
Today, The Crown offers 15 en suite bedrooms, with dining available at Anton’s Bistrot. The Penn Bar also serves food in addition to a range of beers, wines and tea & coffee. Well behaved dogs are welcome on request (extra charges may apply).
