The Bay Royal Hotel

Whitby, Yorkshire, England.
The Bay Royal at Whitby, Yorkshire
The Yorkshire seaside town of Whitby is certainly a historic old place. Indeed, it seems a shame that most visitors are invariably aware of only two notable connections to the past, namely its link to Captain James Cook (a museum dedicated to his life is to be found here), and its associations with the novel Dracula.

In fact, the town, its church of St Mary’s, and Whitby Abbey weren’t just an inspiration to Bram Stoker, but the place actually features in the book – it is where the ship Demeter comes ashore and Dracula himself first treads English soil in the form of a dog.

It is said that Stoker stayed at the Royal Hotel (now the Bay Royal) in 1890, and some suggest that parts of the book were written while in residence. What is certain, however, is that the author would still recognize the place today over 120 years later – a landmark of the town’s West Cliff as it is.

Offering over 100 guest rooms, restaurant, bar and 24-hour reception, The Bay Royal Hotel is rated as 3-star.
