Pousada Castelo de Palmela
Palmela, near Lisbon, Portugal.

Arguably the most famous of Portuguese poets, Luís de Camões, made mention of the Castelo de Palmela in his epic Os Lusíadas of the late 1500’s. However, perhaps its most notable historic significance is that one of Europe’s pioneering 19th century explorers, Hermenegildo de Brito Capelo – famous for being the first such to traverse central Africa from coast to coast – was born here in 1841.
King John II of Portugal was also resident here for some time, as indeed was the notable military commander Nuno Alvarez Pereira. Sadly, the site fell into disrepair but was still recognized as a National Monument of Portugal in 1919. Following this a process of reconstruction began, with the building ultimately becoming a Pousada in 1979.
Today, the restored cloisters of the original convent are evident, while alongside sits the 15th century Church of Santiago containing the tomb of Jorge of Lencastre – the illegitimate son of King John II.
The Pousada de Palmela features 28 guest rooms in all, and is located around 20 miles to the south east of Lisbon.
