Amberley Castle
Near Arundel, West Sussex, England.
Grade-I listed (i.e. a building of exceptional interest), Amberley Castle is undoubtedly one of the most famous castle hotels in the world, let alone England.
Its origins are said to be 12th century, at which time the original manor house was constructed. This was later fortified and embellished over following centuries while the property of the Bishops of Chichester. Its impressive curtain wall is thought to date from the late 1370’s.
Indeed, few who stay here will be left in any doubt as to its antiquity after time in either of its dining rooms: the Queen’s Room dates from the 12th century, and the Great Room is said to have been created in 1165. And while the exceptional architecture of Amberley should be enough for history-buffs, it is also thought that Queen Elizabeth I and Charles II visited the castle during their reigns.
The hotel offers 19 guest rooms in all, divided between the main manor house, castle walls, and in the case of the five Bishopric Suites, within a 17th century stone building situated within the dry moat.
