Du Palais
Biarritz, Aquitaine, France.
Originally known as the Villa Eugenie, the Du Palais was a summer palace built for Napoleon III and, perhaps more specifically, his wife Eugenie de Montijo. Though it took only ten months to complete the building remains an imposing landmark in Biarritz – situated as it is overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and a short walk from the centre of the town.
Du Palais hosted countless European royal figures during the 19th century, from Queen Isabelle of Spain and Leopold II of Belgium to Queen Victoria and Edward VII. Bismarck also sojourned here, as did Sarah Bernardt, Stravinsky, Ernest Hemingway and Charlie Chaplin.
This is certainly one of the grandest hotels in Aquitaine, if not the whole of southern France. Boasting well over 150 rooms, 3 restaurants (including one Michelin-starred establishment), indoor and outdoor swimming pools, the hotel is rightly five-star rated. Anyone planning a no expenses spared romantic vacation in Biarritz might consider the hotel’s Royal Suites: The Edouard VII, Winston Churchill, Alphonse XIII or Sarah Bernhardt. Meanwhile, the Imperial Suites such as the Imperatrice Sissi and Duchesse de Windsor are ideal for those seeking a little space.
