Grand Hotel et de Milan
Milan, Lombardy, Italy.
Welcoming guests since opening in 1863, this five-star hotel is located close to both the La Scala theatre and Duomo Cathedral. Indeed, given that its cellars contain a section of Roman wall built around 250 B.C., the place can claim to have one of the oldest foundations of any hotel in the world.
It’s primary historic claim-to-fame, though, is that the hotel became home to composer Giuseppe Verdi for the last 27 years of his life. In fact the room in which he lived, wrote and died is today an impressive suite bearing his name.
It is also said that the hotel was a favourite of Enrico Caruso, and that he would often stay in Suite 306.
