Langley Castle
Langley on Tyne, Northumberland, England.
A quite frankly magnificent piece of architectural heritage, Langley Castle dates from 1350 and its state of preservation ensures that it warrants a place on Nights in the Past. Indeed, this Grade-I listed building is even described by English Heritage as “Probably the finest tower-house in Northumberland” with “Embattled parapets, bartizans and turrets”.
Located just a few miles to the west of Hexham, it offers a true stay-in-a-castle experience of which there can be few better examples. Indeed, this is a true fortress, with some walls seven feet thick to withstand any potential siege. Its guest rooms – of which there are 27 in total – are mostly individually-named: the De Lucy Room, the Cadwallader Room, and the Castle View Suite among them.
History enthusiasts will almost certainly want to stay in the main building itself rather than the “Castle View” rooms – although these themselves are located within another listed building a few hundred feet from the castle itself.
Langley castle has its own restaurant, bar and is set within its own woodland estate.
Romantic? No doubt about it.
