The Angel
Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, England.

The Angel is certainly old – records show it dating back to the 12th century – and it has certainly welcomed innumerable guests for hundreds of years in its role as a coaching inn. In fact, anyone looking for confirmation of its antiquity should look no further than the Vaults Restaurant - an atmospheric undercroft dating back to the 1100’s and once part of the old abbey.
It should be noted, however, that the structure one sees today is largely Georgian, having been built on the site of an earlier inn during the 1770’s. But even this is wholly deserving of its Grade II* listed status.
The Angel is known to have welcomed “literati and glitterati” during its history, including one or two famous Hollywood names. However, from a times-past perspective, Charles Dickens and King Louis Philippe of France are arguably the most notable.
Situated opposite the Abbey Gardens, The Angel features 80 guest bedrooms and is four star rated. Dogs are welcome on request (charges may apply).
