Bath Place
Oxford, England.
Right at the heart of the city and close to the world-famous Bridge of Sighs (Hertford Bridge), Bath Place is a little family-run hotel formed from a small number of cottages set around a courtyard.
Although their origins were modest (they were originally constructed in the early 16th century by Flemish weavers), this collection of tiny buildings can collectively boast a quite extraordinary and diverse history. For example, one was the birthplace of the beauty Jane Burden who would be immortalized by Dante Gabriel Rosetti in his work Proserpina. She would later marry Rosetti’s pre-Raphaelite contemporary, William Morris.
It is also said that Edward VII would visit friends who were lodging in the houses during the time they were used as student accommodation for Merton College. Moreover, Dorothy L Sayers is also said to have lived at Bath Place during the early 20th century.
Today, Bath Place offers bed and breakfast accommodation via 16 guest rooms.
