The Castle Hotel
Neath, Wales.
Mainly dating from the late-17th century with later additions, the Castle Hotel is proud of its association with Welsh rugby – this being on account that the inaugural meeting of the Welsh Rugby Football Union took place in the building on the 12th of March 1881. The plaques of the original eleven member clubs are still on display in the very room in which the agreement was made.
Its other historic claim-to-fame is that Lord Nelson and Lady Emma Hamilton were supposed to have stayed in the hotel on several occasions. Admittedly, there is no documentary evidence available to support the claim, but the Castle Hotel is reputed to still possess the steps Nelson would have used to get into bed.
Today it offers 29 guest bedrooms in all, a restaurant and two bars (the oak-panelled lounge bar being the one most likely to appeal to the history enthusiast).
