Chateau de Fere
Fere en Tardenois, Picardy, France.

The original castle – built in the early 13th century and now a ruin – serves as a stunning backdrop the present day chateau: a mere 16th century youngster.
The first was built by the grandson of King Louis VI and, in a roundabout way, eventually became the property of Montmorency (the powerful Governor General of France and Chancellor who endured the reigns of six kings). Henry II was a brief owner, as was Charlotte de Montmorency – the target of Henri IV’s unwelcome affections. Alas, a later owner called Philip Egalite was seemingly so eager to keep on the right side of the Republicans that he partly demolished the place.
The existing chateau was formerly a wing of the royal castle and was converted into a hotel in 1956.
Set amid 60 acres of its own grounds and parkland, the Chateau de Fere features an outdoor swimming pool (open seasonally), restaurant, bar and 29 guest bedrooms and suites.
Paris is around an hour away by car.
