Hotel Weisses Kreuz
Innsbruck, Austria.
Reputedly over 500 years old, the Weisses Kreuz was first documented in 1465 when it was licensed as the "Gasthof zum Weysen Kreutz" – the white cross being a symbol of the Knights of the Maltese Order.
As befits a place of such great age the hotel certainly has a rich local history. It was here, for example, that Andreas Hofer - the leader of the Tyrolean peasant revolt against Napoleon – made his headquarters in 1809.
However, its most celebrated historic event was the arrival of the 13 year old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his father, Leopold, on December 15th 1769. In fact his father recorded the event in a letter back home saying: “We are well, thank God. We are lodging at the Weisses Kreuz.”
Today, the hotel is three star rated and possesses 40 guest rooms (alas, we cannot be sure in which of these Mozart and his father would have slept).
