If you’re seeking the embodiment of a “chocolate box” English village, then Castle Combe is probably it. But always remember that Castle Combe has been around a great deal longer than decoratively packaged confectionery, and it truly is an extraordinarily beautiful little place unworthy of saccharine appellatives.
Of all its exquisite buildings the Manor House Hotel is by far the grandest, even if it isn’t the oldest; much of the building is of the seventeenth century, although its heritage dates back to the 1400’s.
Today operating as a 5 star hotel, the Manor House is a popular hideaway for the rich and famous. It is said that when Margaret Thatcher came to stay she spent much of her time taking in the views from the Full Glass Bar and considering her memoirs. Historically, the most notable figure associated with the estate is Sir John Oldcastle – the man upon whom Shakespeare is said to have based the character of Sir John Falstaff.
The Manor House offers 48 guest rooms split between the main house and mews cottages. It also boasts a Michelin starred restaurant: the Bybrook.
