The Royal Lion
Lyme Regis, Dorset, England.

According to the English Heritage description which accompanies its Grade II listed status, the Royal Lion was see today is actually comprised of two separate inns. The north western section is that of the original 16th century "Lion", while the south eastern part is formed from the "New Inn" which is of a later date.
However, those with more of an interest in its historic connections than its architecture will no doubt be drawn to a supposed connection with Jane Austen. Alas, while some believe the author would have stayed in the Royal Lion while in Lyme Regis in 1804 (the town features in Persuasion), such a link is impossible to verify. But we do know that King Edward VII rested in the building for one night while still Prince of Wales. Furthermore, we also know that the famous American artist James McNeil Whistler was a guest during the Autumn of 1865, during which time he created works such as The Little Rose of Lyme Regis.
These days the Royal Lion offers accommodation via rooms located in both the old section of the building and the courtyard area. The history enthusiast will no doubt be most drawn towards the 'Traditional' rooms which are situated in the former.
