The Izaak Walton Hotel
Dovedale, Derbyshire, England
The book The Compleat Angler is arguably one of the most famous in the English language. Originally published in 1653, the author, Izaak Walton, continued to add to it such that further editions continued to be produced for a further two decades.
In creating the work, Walton enjoyed the simple pleasures of fishing along many stretches of river throughout the country. One such is known to have been the River Dove in Derbyshire. Indeed, while in the area he is known to have stayed at a local guesthouse which today bears his name: The Izaak Walton Hotel.
Like the book, the property itself dates from the 17th century and offers thirty five rooms overall (history enthusiasts will no doubt want to stay in one of those located in the original building where the author would have slept).
The establishment also owns some fishing rights on the Dove, and is able to offer a limited number of day-permits to guests.
