Marshall House
Savannah, Georgia, USA.
Built in 1851 to serve the need for overnight accommodation in Savannah, this historic hotel owes its name to the businesswoman who built the property: Mary Marshall.
Rightly listed as a National Historic Building in 2000, the house has retained many original features, including windows, doors and staircases.
In between acting as a hotel, Marshall House operated as office space for businesses during the 1950’s. However, it also became a hospital for wounded Union soldiers during the American Civil War and it was during this time that it was occupied by troops led by the famous General Sherman.
Its other notable historic claim-to-fame was in it having been where the author of the Uncle Remus stories, Joel Chandler Harris, lodged during the 1870’s while working at the Savannah Morning News.
Marshall House offers 68 guest rooms in all, many of which possess original architectural detail such as decorative fireplaces. It also boasts its own restaurant, the 45 Bistro.
