Jared Coffin House
Nantucket, Massachusetts, USA.
It wasn't long after this building was completed in 1845 that a massive fire swept through Nantucket taking away many of its most historic buildings. Fortunately, a fair number survived the inferno, including what was then known as the Ocean House Hotel.
That it remained intact and is a fine example of 19th century New England architecture should be enough, but its main historic significance is that Herman Melville, author of Moby Dick, stayed here in 1852, a year after his great work was published. Indeed, it is thought that he came to Nantucket (where so much of the novel is based) ostensibly to visit Captain George Pollard Jnr. whose experiences had been a great influence on Melville.
Accommodation is located both in the main house and the adjacent Daniel Webster building.
More information to be uploaded soon.
