Palacio Hotel
Estoril, Portugal.

A grand five-star hotel dating only from 1930, the Palacio Estoril deserves its place on Nights in the Past on account of its illustrious guest list.
Not only was it a favoured haunt of European nobility during its early years and exiled royalty during World War II, but it was famed for being frequented by German and British spies who would spend time in its bar.
Perhaps it is because of the latter that some ascribe the hotel as providing inspiration for Ian Fleming, author of the James Bond books. Moreover, the place was used in the filming of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.
Other famous names to stay at the Palacio include Paul Reynaud (the French statesman and Prime Minister during 1940), and Orson Welles.
The hotel offers over 160 guest rooms, several restaurants, an outdoor swimming pool (open seasonally) and a bar. The centre of Lisbon is a short drive away.
