Historic Hotels in The Republic of Ireland
The Merrion Hotel. Dublin
The Merrion is, without doubt, one of the finest hotels in the Republic of Ireland. It was formed by amalgamating four Georgian townhouses built in the mid 18th century, each one originally designed for wealthy merchants and nobility. Today it offers over 140 rooms to visitors from across the globe, be they politicians, celebrities or those simply wishing to explore the city.
One of the original townhouses (number 24, to be specific) was the birthplace of a certain Arthur Wellesley - better known to history as the 1st Duke of Wellington. TripAdvisor
The Shelbourne Hotel. Dublin
A city landmark since 1824, the Shelbourne has been recently restored - though thankfully without altering the classic ambience of the building. The hotel offers over 250 rooms, of which 12 of the suites are named after famous guests associated with the hotel - most renowned of these is the Princess Grace Suite favoured once by Grace Kelly.
In 1922, room 112 became central to the development of the Irish nation - it was here that Michael Collins created the first draft of the Irish Constitution. Authors James Joyce and William Makepeace Thackeray also paid homage to the hotel in their works. TripAdvisor
The Imperial Hotel. Cork
The Imperial has been at the centre of Cork’s commercial life since 1813 when the city’s Merchant Committee requested architect Sir Thomas Deane to build “The Commercial Rooms”. A few years later these were extended to create a hotel and coach-yard. Today, however, the building offers more than just a place for businessmen to meet - its full title is, in fact, The Imperial Hotel with Escape Salon and Spa.
Here have stayed literary figures such as Sir Walter Scott, Charles Dickens and William Makepeace Thakeray; the composer Liszt; and room 115 was where Michael Collins slept the night before his death. TripAdvisor
Renvyle House. County Galway
One of Ireland’s first country house hotels, the Renvyle House first opened its doors to guests in 1883. Located amid some of the country’s most rugged and beautiful scenery, visitors enjoy the same comforts which have appealed to many prominent figures over the past century - W B Yeats, Augustus John and Winston Churchill all spent time here.
