Chillingham Castle. Alnwick.

Anyone attempting to create a mental image of the typical English castle may find themselves picturing something closely resembling Chillingham - the place even has a torture chamber.

Dating back to the 12th century, the building was fully fortified in the 14th. By the 18th century, however, the time of feuds and danger had passed and the grounds one sees today were landscaped.

The interior of the castle is equally impressive as its exterior. The
James 1st drawing room commemorates the monarch’s visit in 1617, while the oldest room in the building, the Edward 1st Room, similarly pays homage to the visit of “Longshanks” in 1298.

The other notable historic guest to have stayed at Chillingham is
Henry III in 1255.

We are extremely keen to expand our section devoted to historic hotels in Northumberland. As such, please let us know of any special places to stay you believe should feature on the site. Accommodation can be a budget bed & breakfast or a luxury country house, but any suggestions should only concern those that dispense excellent hospitality to the visitor. We would be extremely pleased to discover more period hotels and inns close to Hadrian’s Wall, and others that appeal to those seeking a romantic break. Thank you.
