Feathers
Ludlow, Shropshire, England.

How many great figures from history must have passed through the doors of Feathers. Alas, we can only speculate as no written record seems to exist nor verbal testimony forthcoming. But the reason for its inclusion here is not based on any supposed connection with monarchs, literary giants or legends of stage and screen. Instead, it warrants a place on account of it being one of the most visually beautiful hotels anywhere in the world.
Of course, such things are a matter of opinion. However, it takes something for the New York Times to describe a place as being the “most handsome inn in the world”. Furthermore, just to underline the architectural significance of the building, it possesses a Grade-I listing – a status which is afforded to only the most important of old structures.
The oldest part of Feathers (which includes its extraordinary façade) dates from 1619, but it wasn’t until around 1670 that the place became an inn. Today it offers 40 guest bedrooms, a restaurant and a bar. Ludlow itself is a historic and picturesque little town, with its castle less than quarter of a mile from the hotel door.
