The Grand Amsterdam. Amsterdam

Located at the heart of historic Amsterdam, the 131-room, 35-suite Grand lives up to its name in every respect. Since being a convent in the 15th century, a royal inn during the 16th, and successively the headquarters of the Dutch Admiralty, the building was only transformed into a hotel in the early 1990‘s.

The Grand Amsterdam’s three “Royal Suites” are named after former residents:
Maria de Medici, William of Orange (later William III of England), and William V.

Intercontinental Amstel. Amsterdam

The Amstel has an enviable reputation amongst grand hotels, and since first opening in 1867 has played host to countless twentieth-century celebrities – Walt Disney, Marlene Dietrich, Elizabeth Taylor, Steven Spielberg to name but a few.

From a historic perspective, the hotel has also played host to guests such as the Tsar & Tsarina of Russia, Henry Kissinger and Gustav Eiffel. For more details and secure online booking visit TripAdvisor | Expedia | www.lastminute.com | Splendia

Hotel King. Amsterdam.

To most, the name Margaretha Geertruida Zelle means little. However, it was in the building which now houses the Hotel King was one of her previous homes. Of course, the world - and history - knows her better as Mata Hari: the exotic dancer executed for espionage during World War I.

Recently renovated, her former abode today offers 30 guest rooms. For more information, try Hotel King’s entries at

Hotel Groot Warnsborn. Arnhem.

The current building may date back only to the early 1800‘s, but the history of the estate begins in the 15th century when the land was leased out by Duke Arnold of Gelre. But it is its connection to a 20th century icon for which this fine country house is most famed. Writing to her grandmother, Anne Frank clearly enjoyed happier times at Groot Warnsborn: “Isn’t it lovely here”, she noted on a postcard during her stay in 1941.

Today, this 4-star hotel boasts a total of 30 rooms, equally divided between the main house and the old coach house. More information on facilities and availability can be found by visiting the hotel’s entry at Expedia and TripAdvisor
