Hazlewood Castle

Near Tadcaster, Yorkshire, England.
Hazlewood Castle exterior
Where to begin?

Hazlewood Castle is, without question, one of the most historic buildings presently offering hotel accommodation anywhere in Britain. This is perhaps best illustrated by its official Grade I listed status, the description of which indicates 13th century origins, with additions and alterations taking place over many years (including a 15th century tower and interior work during the mid 1700's).

The castle is inextricably linked to the fortunes of the Vavasour family, beginning with Moshe le Vavasour who came to hold the land owing to his allegiance to William the Conqueror. Indeed, it was he who built the first structure on the site; a watchtower. It exists to this day.

Its connections to immediately recognisable figures from history arguably begins with the Battle of Towton moor which took place nearby in March 1461. Renowned or its bloodiness, this event culminated in the defeat of Lancastrian forces by the Yorkists, and it is said by some that following his victory King Edward IV refreshed himself with food and drink in the castle while the Vavasours took refuge in the chapel.

Whether there is any truth in the Edward IV legend we will never know, but it is recorded that Mary Queen of Scots spent the night of 27th January 1569 at Hazlewood as the guest of John Vavasour. This particular event took place as she travelled between Bolton Castle in Yorkshire and Tutbury Castle in Staffordshire.

Today, this exceptional piece of English history offers accommodation via 32 guest bedrooms and suites. These are divided between the main building, a courtyard area, and a number of newer rooms ("St Leonard's") located off the library. Those with a passion for the past will no doubt be drawn to those situated in the castle itself, namely
Jasmine, Rose, Lavender, Hibiscus, Elderflower, Tansy, Crocus, Bergamot, and Honeysuckle.
