Fawsley Hall. Daventry.

As with many of Britain’s finest country houses, the Fawsley Hall of today is a product of restorations, developments and alterations over many centuries - a sequence of architectural events that add to the character of a building rather than taking anything away.

The oldest section of the house is the South Wing. Built in the early 1500s by its owner, Richard Knightley, much of the ground floor of the structure now houses the hotel’s restaurant. And directly above is the very room in which Queen Elizabeth I used during her stay in 1575 - a documented fact.

The Great Hall was constructed a little later in 1537, while the north wing was a product of Georgian architecture. The final addition to the house, the north east wing, was made in 1869.

It is also worth mentioning that Louisa Mary Bywater, who married Sir Rainald Knightley, befriended John Merrick (‘The Elephant Man’) and provided him with lodgings in a cottage on the estate.

Fawsley Hall offers a total of 58 bedrooms and suites, including that used by Elizabeth I (above left). For more information visit

The Saracen’s Head. Towcester.

Dating back at least four centuries, The Saracen’s Head has a rich local history. It is, however, its connection with Charles Dickens for which it is most renowned – the inn features in the great author’s very first novel, The Pickwick Papers.

'I say,' remonstrated Bob Sawyer, looking in at the coach
window, as they pulled up before the door of the Saracen's Head,
Towcester, 'this won't do, you know.'
