Elcot Park

Near Newbury, Berkshire, England
Elcot Park Hotel
Purportedly built in 1768 (though its English Heritage listing suggests later), this Grade-II listed property certainly ticks all the boxes for classic Georgian country house styling. That said, it’s a little larger these days courtesy of 20th century additions, something borne out by its possessing over 70 guest rooms.

While there are certainly some period features of note such as the grand fireplace, the notable historic aspect of the property is that it was formerly home to Lady Shelley and daughter. Alas, her coming to live at Elcot Park was tinged with tragedy given that she had only just lost both her husband and her son; the latter being the great poet Percy Bysshe Shelley who died in the infamous boating accident of July 1822.

Located just a few miles outside Newbury and within easy reach of Hungerford, Elcot Park sits amid 16 acres of its own grounds. Guest rooms are located both within the main historic house and the renovated stable block, while visitors will also find a fitness centre, indoor swimming pool, and steam room.

Elcot Park is situated just a few miles to the west of Newbury, with Hungerford and Marlborough also within easy reach for those travelling by car.
