L’Hostellerie du Chateau. Briquebec, Normandy

This is a genuine medieval castle standing a mere half-hour’s drive from Cherbourg in the Cotentin peninsular. Built in the 11th Century, the building has seen more than its fair share of Anglo-French historic rivalry and was once owned by Robert Bertrand who fought with William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings.

Medieval connections and romance aside, the hotel has played host to both
Queen Victoria and Field Marshall Montgomery. Tripadvisor> | LateRooms

Chateau Les Bruyeres. Cambremer, Normandy

Built in 1816 on the site of much earlier manor, Chateau Les Bruyeres passed through several hands during its early years.

It was during the ownership period of the Petit family that the Chateau accommodated arguably its most famous guest, Marcel Proust. Indeed, so taken with the location was the author that he chose to immortalise it in the novel Within a Budding Grove (A l’Ombre des Jeunes Filles en Fleur) published in 1919. La Chaumiere. You might expect to see this sort of place in the middle of England – a beautiful timber frame manor house. This, however, has the mouth of the River Seine on its doorstep. Expedia

La Ferme St Simeon. This might once have been a farm, but the rustic way of life of yesteryear has made way for the demands of the 21st century traveller. Still, here you will be following in the footsteps of numerous impressionist artists who came here for inspiration all those years ago. Expedia

Hotel le Cheval Blanc. No real need for the French dictionary in order to work out the English translation of this centuries-old inn. Situated at the entrance to the old port of the town, this former post relay station has welcomed the likes of Victor Hugo, Claude Monet and the Emperor Joseph II in its time. www.lastminute.com | Expedia

Le Bec Hellouin
