Situated in the centre of the Eternal City between the Spanish Steps and Via Veneto, The Hotel Eden was founded in 1889 by hotelier Francesco Nistelweck having originally been a private residence in the Ludovisi district. Today it is popular with the likes of Pierce Brosnan and Nicole Kidman. |

St. Regis Grand |

Without doubt a Roman landmark in its own right, what was once Le Grand Hotel has recently benefited from a $35 million restoration. The 113-year-old hotel now boasts 138 guest rooms and 23 luxurious suites and is a regular fixture in most “best hotels in the world” lists. |

Bernini Bristol |
Named after the First Baronet of Bristol and the artist Benini who sculpted the city’s Triton Fountain, the hotel began welcoming guests in October 1874. It benefits not only from its reputation as a luxury hotel, but also its enviable position at the start of the Via Veneto near the Trevi Fountain and The Spanish Steps. |

Park Hotel Villa Grazioli. Part of the renowned Relais & Chateaux group, there’s more than a hint of Palladian symmetry to this 16th century villa. Built by Cardinal Antonio Carafa in 1580, it even boasts original XVI and XVII century artworks. Accommodation is both within the main house and two eighteenth century buildings (the Paggeria and Limonaia) which are joined via underground corridors. Four star rated. Expedia |

La Posta Vecchia. Once owned by John Paul Getty (who describe it as a “serene and heavenly home”), this beautiful house dates back to 1640 when it was built by Prince Orsini. Interestingly, after it was damaged by fire in the early twentieth century, restoration and building works uncovered the remains of a large Roman villa under the property - this now a small museum in the basement of the building. La Posta Vecchia is less than an hour from the centre of Rome, and is located right on the Tyrrhenian Sea, directly to the west of the city. Expedia |

Do you know of any accommodation in and around Rome you think should be included on Nights In The Past? If so, please let us know. The Eternal City is a hugely popular destination, and we aim to help the visitor find somewhere remarkable to stay - period boutique hotels and beautiful villas, for example.. We are particularly keen to learn of romantic and historic hotels in Centro Storico and those close to the Roman Forum and Colosseum. All suggestions should provide high quality hospitality and have maintained most of their architectural heritage. Thank you. |
