Hotel Eden (A Royal Meridien)

Situated in the centre of the Eternal City between the Spanish Steps and Via Veneto, The Hotel Eden was founded in 1889 by hotelier Francesco Nistelweck having originally been a private residence in the Ludovisi district. Today it is popular with the likes of Pierce Brosnan and Nicole Kidman.

Both
Field Marshall Montgomery and Rommel are said to have stayed at the Hotel Eden (though it’s fair to assume not simultaneously), as certainly did Ernest Hemingway.

St. Regis Grand

Without doubt a Roman landmark in its own right, what was once Le Grand Hotel has recently benefited from a $35 million restoration. The 113-year-old hotel now boasts 138 guest rooms and 23 luxurious suites and is a regular fixture in most “best hotels in the world” lists.

King Alfonso XIII of Spain was a permanent resident from 1934 to 1941, while Emile Zola stayed during the autumn of 1894. Leo Tolstoy is another revered former guest, while today one is more likely to bump into members of the Hollywood glitterati.

Bernini Bristol

Named after the First Baronet of Bristol and the artist Benini who sculpted the city’s Triton Fountain, the hotel began welcoming guests in October 1874. It benefits not only from its reputation as a luxury hotel, but also its enviable position at the start of the Via Veneto near the Trevi Fountain and The Spanish Steps.

More than a mere handful of European royals have found their way to the Benini Bristol - these include Prussian
Emperor Frederick II and Tsarina Catherine of Russia

Civita Castellana

Palace Hotel Relais Falisco. Situated a little over 30 miles to the north of Rome, this four star hotel dates back to the 17th century. Only a few steps from the Duomo dei Cosmati Cathedral, it offers 43 rooms, of which eight are suites. Expedia

Grottaferrata

Park Hotel Villa Grazioli. Part of the renowned Relais & Chateaux group, there’s more than a hint of Palladian symmetry to this 16th century villa. Built by Cardinal Antonio Carafa in 1580, it even boasts original XVI and XVII century artworks. Accommodation is both within the main house and two eighteenth century buildings (the Paggeria and Limonaia) which are joined via underground corridors. Four star rated. Expedia

Ladispoli

La Posta Vecchia. Once owned by John Paul Getty (who describe it as a “serene and heavenly home”), this beautiful house dates back to 1640 when it was built by Prince Orsini. La Posta Vecchia is less than an hour from the centre of Rome, and is located right on the Tyrrhenian Sea, directly to the west of the city. Expedia

Nerola

Castello Orsini Hotel Nerola. Though later enlarged, parts of this impressive castle date from the 10th century - making it one of the most ancient places to stay anywhere in the world. This 5-star hotel offers 80 rooms in all, many in the main building with others located in other adjacent buildings such as the XVIII century Villino Salimei. Expedia

Viterbo

San Pellegrino. Bed & breakfast accommodation amid a well-preserved medieval Italian house. Expedia
