CARLISLE

Built towards the end of the 1700’s, the building has been offering accommodation for the past two centuries. Between 1800 and 1835 it was owned by General Robert Henderson, and it retains much of the Georgian charm it owes to this period. Jacob’s Resting Place offers a total of 5 guest rooms.

Historic Significance: It is reputed to have been on the site that George Washington met his army in 1794.

CHARLESTON

Built in 1830 and for many years known as the Pavilion Hotel, the building is located right at the heart of Charleston’s historic district. It offers a total of 93 guest rooms.

Historic Significance: Edgar Allen Poe is known to have stayed here while stationed at nearby Fort Moultrie.

CHARLESTON

This AAA Four-Diamond inn is undeniably one of the most historic in the United States. It offers a total of 19 guest rooms split between the main house and two carriage houses.

Historic Significance: Of all the homes belonging to the fifty-five signatories of the U.S Constitution, only 15 survive. This is one of them – and the only one to offer overnight accommodation. Built by John Rutledge in 1763, it is known that George Washington visited in 1791. Unsurprisingly, therefore, it has been designated a National Landmark by the US Department of the Interior.

NEWPORT

Benefiting from a recent multi-million dollar renovation, the Hotel Viking offers 209 guest rooms which combine old world charm with the conveniences modern travellers have come to expect.

Historic Significance: Even the hotel’s original wing is a comparative youngster. Built in 1926 it’s one of the most recent to feature anywhere on Nights In The Past. But it’s still managed to attract more than its fair share of notable figures in its relatively short history. The Astors and Vanderbilts were two families associated with the hotel in its early days.

CRATER LAKE

This former stagecoach inn is located south of Crater Lake National Park and dates back to 1888. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it offers ten rooms in the main house, and a further fourteen within more recent outbuildings.

Historic Significance: Former guests include Theodore Roosevelt, William Jennings Bryan, Jack London and Zane Grey.

GRANT’S PASS

Originally built as a fishing lodge in 1924, the Weasku Inn was completely restored during the late 1990’s. Today it offers five en suite rooms in the main building, and a further 12 cabins overlooking the Rogue River.

Historic Significance: A favoured retreat for the rich and famous, the Weasku has welcomed figures such as President Herbert Hoover and Zane Grey. It was also where Clark Gable retreated for several weeks following the death of his wife Carole Lombard – they had both enjoyed their stays here previously.

BEAR CREEK

Offering 6 rooms and 2 suites – including a Presidential Suite – the Bischwind B&B dates back to 1895 when it was built by the lumber baron, Albert Lewis.

Historic Significance: President Roosevelt was a guest of its original owner, and the aptly named Presidential Dining Room has also hosted William Howard Taft and aviation pioneer, Igor Sikorsky.

JIM THORPE

It may be in the heart of Pennsylvania, but the Inn at Jim Thorpe is distinctly New Orleans-esque. With a Victorian flavour to the interior, it offers 34 guest rooms, including 11 suites.

Historic Significance: Built on the site of the former White Swan Hotel which was destroyed by fire in the late 1840’s, the hotel has played host to famous guests from a wide variety of backgrounds: Thomas Edison, Buffalo Bill and John D. Rockefeller among them.
