RED LODGE

Located in a former mining town, The Pollard exudes “old west” charm – oak panelling and Victorian décor galore. Built around 1893, the hotel offers 39 guest rooms, some of which have balconies and mountain views.

Historical Significance: This is the sort of hotel of which enthusiasts of the real “wild west” will approve: the property was once frequented by the likes of Buffalo Bill Cody, and Martha Jane Cannary-Burke (better known as Calamity Jane).

NEW CASTLE

Opening for business in 1874, this landmark building underwent a colossal restoration having been listed as one of the “11 most endangered places” by the National Trust for Historic Places in 1996. Now returned to splendour, the hotel offers over 160 guest rooms and suites, many with harbour and ocean views.

Historic Significance:
It was here in 1905 that the Treaty of Portsmouth was devised thereby ending the Russo-Japanese War. The talks were attended by many delegates from both nations, and were brought about by Theodore Roosevelt – actions which would win him the Nobel Peace Prize.

TILTON

No prizes for guessing the year of construction, but potential guests might like to know that it was in 2001 that that this historic old building underwent a thorough restoration. It now features 11 en suite guest rooms, and is ideally located for those seeking to visit the beautiful Lakes Region of New Hampshire.

Historic Significance: Both Henry Ford and Thomas Edison chose to spend vacations here.

BRADFORD

Built in the mid-nineteenth century, Rosewood Country Inn is set in 12 acres of hilltop land and has been meticulously restored to its former glory since being purchased by the current owners in 1991. The hotel has a total of 11, very individual, guest rooms.

Historic Significance:
New Hampshire it might be, but there’s certainly a Hollywood theme to the guest list: Charlie Chaplin, Gloria Swanson, Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford have all relaxed at the Rosewood.

LITTLETON

Quintessential New England, Thayer’s Inn has been welcoming guests since the mid nineteenth century. On the National Register of Historic Places, it has a total of 40 guest rooms and is ideally located for those wishing to explore the White Mountains.

Historic Significance:
It is said that Ulysses S Grant addressed an audience from the hotel balcony in 1869, while other famous guests include President Franklin Pierce, General George McClellan, Henry Ford, P. T. Barnum and General Tom Thumb. Numerous other late-twentieth century figures have also spent time here including Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter and George H. Bush.

CIMARRON

Originally known as Lambert’s Inn on account of its first owner, Henry Lambert, it is said to have witnessed more than twenty murders when the town of Cimarron was patronised by the real-life Good, Bad and Ugly. Of course, the atmosphere is far more serene these days – the hotel offers 14 rooms in the old building and ten in an adjacent two-storey annexe.

Historic Significance: Lots. This hotel should be on the itinerary of every “Wild West” enthusiast. Built in 1872, the number of bullet holes in the ceiling of the main dining room proves that more than a few characters frequented the place in days gone by. Jesse James, Buffalo Bill Cody, Wyatt & Morgan Earp, Pat Garret, Billy The Kid, Kit Carson, Doc Holliday, Clay Allison, Black Jack Ketchum and Bob Ford (Jesse James’ killer) all stayed here. Beat that for frontier history.

TAOS

Also known as "Las Palomas de Taos" on account of the doves (palomas) which live around the property, it owes its existing name to the wealthy arts patron of the same name. The building (originally constructed from adobe) was enlarged in the early 1920’s and became a popular retreat for artists and writers. Today the property offers 22 rooms, most of which are in the main house its former owner would have known.

Historic Significance: D. H. Lawrence stayed at the house during September 1922, though it is said he never quite saw eye-to-eye with his hostess. Other notable artistic figures of the time, including Georgia O’Keeffe, also visited.
